What are the astrological houses?

If the signs describe the style of an energy and the planets describe what that energy is, the houses describe where it all plays out in your life. There are twelve houses, just as there are twelve signs, and together they slice your chart into the practical arenas of being human: your money, your home, your relationships, your career, your inner world and more. A planet's sign tells you how it behaves; its house tells you which corner of your life it shapes.

How the houses checker works

This tool uses your Rising sign, also called your Ascendant. In the whole sign house system, your Rising sign becomes your entire 1st house, the next sign in the zodiac becomes your 2nd house, the one after that your 3rd, and so on all the way around. So once you know your Rising sign, the sign on every other house follows automatically. Pick yours above and the checker lays out all twelve at once, each with its ruling planet and what it governs.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

The twelve houses fall into three groups by how active they are. Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the powerhouses, tied to action and big life pillars. Succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) are about building and holding on to what the angles begin. Cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) are about learning, adapting and processing. Planets in angular houses tend to shape your life most visibly.

Whole sign houses, and why we use them

Astrologyic uses whole sign houses, the oldest and one of the clearest house systems. Each house is exactly one full sign, so the maths is simple and the meaning is easy to read. Other systems, like Placidus, divide the houses by precise degrees of the horizon, which means a single house can stretch across two signs and the cusps land mid-sign. For learning and for clean, logical readings, whole sign keeps everything tidy: one house, one sign. When you want the exact degree-based version with your planets placed in, cast your full birth chart.

Astrological houses questions, answered

How do I find out what sign rules each of my houses? +

Pick your Rising sign from the menu above and the checker maps it across all twelve houses using the whole sign system: your Rising sign becomes your 1st house, the next sign your 2nd, and so on around the zodiac. You instantly see which sign and ruling planet sits on every house.

How do I know my Rising sign first? +

Your Rising, or Ascendant, is the sign that was climbing over the horizon at the exact minute you were born, so it needs your birth time and place. If you do not know it, use the Rising Sign Calculator to find it, then come back and read your houses here.

How are astrological houses different from signs? +

Signs describe the style of an energy, houses describe the area of life it plays out in. There are twelve of each. A planet in a sign tells you how it acts; the same planet in a house tells you where, such as in your career, your home or your relationships.

How does the whole sign house system work? +

In whole sign houses, each house is exactly one full sign. Your Rising sign fills the entire 1st house, the next sign the entire 2nd house, and so on. It is the oldest and one of the clearest systems, and it is the one Astrologyic uses. Other systems like Placidus split houses by degree, so the cusps can fall mid-sign.

How do I get my exact house placements? +

This checker shows the sign on each house from your Rising sign, which is all you need for whole sign houses. To see which planets actually fall in each house, with the reasoning behind every placement, cast your free birth chart with your birth date, time and city.

How do I read a house once I know its sign? +

Combine the two. Take what the house governs (say the 10th, career and reputation) and colour it with the sign on it (say Aries, bold and pioneering) to get a career that rewards initiative and leadership. Tap any sign to read its full traits and apply them to that area of life.
